Group A Winner :: Andrew Nevitt

The 2009 Vuelta de San Jose was fun as expected and with the shorter TT and the time bonuses I thought I might have a chance at winning it this time! I did not know how big the time bonuses were until I was on my way to the criterium and that was when it seemed to me like it was anyones race...

With Mike TT Holt doing the race I knew we were all racing for second, even lower for me. The conditions were perfect for the event at 9 a.m. as it was perfectly calm and the temperature must have been around seventy five degrees. I was first so I could make three soccer games with the first one starting at 10 a.m. in Saratoga. I forgot my heart rate chest strap so I decided to go with perceived effort, like I had a choice. I was able to hold 28 m.p.h. until the park where the grade kicks up a bit. Once I got over the hill I just gave it all I had for a 10:32 or ONE minute slower than Mike Holt, man he can fly! The second place finisher from LGBRC was the only other rider to break ten minutes and from there six other riders rolled in faster than I did. I was placed in tenth but I had the same time as Daryl Spano who is always going strong. The highest SJBC placed rider was young Daniel Farinha.

Stage two is the criterium and it was to be fifty minutes long and have two time bonus primes and time bonuses for the finish... If you could win both and the race it would be worth one minute which would move me up to a tie for first if Mike Holt got nothing, not likely. Mike Gadow and I decided we would help out Daniel since he is a very strong racer and is having a really good year. Prime one had Mike Hernandez and another rider about ten to fifteen seconds off the front. After turn two I rolled by Daniel and told him to stay on my wheel. From there I just drilled it until we caught Mike between turn three and four. I kept it going until Mike Gadow took over just before turn four. I jumped back in about six back and Mike drilled it to turn four where Daniel took the fifteen seconds and I hung on for five! Now Daniel was closer and we still had another prime and the finish. The second prime had Daryl Spano and Dave Rosso off the front and they got around a twenty second lead. This time Daniel was drilling it on the back of the course but we got to turn four and we were still about eight seconds back. I tried to get the five seconds remaining but Jon Sek flew by me like I was standing still to nab the bonus! Now it was all back together and we had about eight laps to go. With four to go Mike Hernandez goes with another rider and they start opening up a good lead. With two to go we start to attack to catch and we only get them with a half-lap to go! Now we are a tight bunch and no one is going until the LGBRC rider hits it just before turn four so I yell to Mike Gadow to go and he jumps on his wheel, with me on Mike's wheel. Mike makes a great move and goes from the corner and gets a little gap on LGBRC guy who is second on G.C. From there I came by the LGBRC guy and almost caught Mike but he got the thrity seconds and I got twenty five or thirty in total with my earlier prime. Daniel ended up fourth and with his fifteen seconds also got thirty total and he was now eight seconds down and I was thirty.

The road race started out fast since Daryl Spano and Jon Sek attacked from the start! I did not even see it as I started off in the back but I thought it was strange when we all of a sudden drilled it after about a mile of racing! Just as we drill it Daniel drops his chain and in trying to get it back on he got it all tangled up so he has to get off his bike to fix it. Mike Gadow stayed back with Daniel and helped bring him back up to the pack. Luckily we slowed on the backside of the course but man that hurt with no warmup! We got close to Daryl and Jon and then slowed up so Mike Hernandez bridges and it is looking dangerous but Daryl is well placed on G.C. and highest in the group so I am happy to sit in and give him a chance to win. Sometime around now Daniel and Mike catch on so Daniel only thinks Mike is off but really there are three guys off. We hit the wall and Daniel attacks and I think uh oh he must not know there are three guys off. I make a comment like that to Mike Holt and he agrees. We tell Daniel on the downhill after the wall and he takes the news well. At least we worked the field, I was going to do that anyway as I want them to suffer some! Heading up to the start finish Raffi attacks as the break is only thirty seconds up the road. He pulls a long way and as we catch Jon Sek I start to help. Unfortuneately we get caught a few miles later and we catch the break just after that. Now we ride together to the wall and it is Daniel taking the win with me second and I am not sure who was third but Daniel is leading now and I figure I am fourth or so and I am feeling good. LGBRC guy now takes a flyer and he is making time as he is strong, remember he was second in the TT. I tell Yuma and Daniel we should let him bake out there by himself and catch him before the wall so we can get the time. Raffi wants nothing of this and does all the work to pull him back in just as we start lap three. It seems to me Mike Hernandez went again sometime on this lap but I am not sure... All I know is we hit the wall together and it was Daniel LGBRC and me three abreast sprinting up the wall. I was going to let Daniel win it but LGBRC was pulling away so I knew I needed to keep him from taking it so I got the win with LGBRC and Daniel coming in for second and third. We got a really nice gap but Daniel and I discussed the fact that we had the best sprints left so why not wait and recover from the effort. From here Yuma goes to the front and drills it all the way to the finish keeping it single file and making it so no one can attack! What a great job for Daniel. We rounded the last bend and Mike Holt goes but sits down right away and I think hmmm he must be cramping and Benjo does the same... I say to myself now or never you old fart! I knew Daniel was behind me and if he wins or gets second and I win he gets the overall. I also knew if I won and he was third that I would win the overall so I killed it and somehow won it and Daniel was third!

I want to thank my club SJBC for being such a fun place to hang! Mike Gadow and his son Ryan just came over and they were so happy about it they could not get over it. We have a great club that does so much for its riders we are all very lucky to have this resource. J.R., Steven, Romil, the Farinhas, the Juarez family, the Laniers, the Biscardis, everyone ( and I missed a ton of names) should be proud of what they help to make here at SJBC! This is a fun race that helps promote club unity and fitness. We got 82 people together on a weekend in late September, a hot weekend, and had a blast! Great job to all!

Group B Winner :: Ryan Gadow

ITT:
My dad and I drove to the race together. My dad and I were really excited to be racing for our new team - SJBC. When I got there Andrew Biscardi was there and we talked for a little bit, then I went to register with Gento and Yuma. Then I got on the trainer and started to warm up. Daniel and Vincent came by and asked if I wanted to warm up on the course with them so I went and warmed up with them. When we got back, I got in line for the race. Andrew Lanier was the start man and when the race started I think I went out a little too hard. I passed my 30 second man and I don't know about my minute man because a one guy in front of me turned a different way. On the road before the climb I was passed by my dad and I started to blow up right before the climb. I went up the climb a lot slower than I wanted to. From there on I just tried to ride as fast as I could to the line but, I felt really slow. I ended up 6 seconds away from the A group. Next year I hope to make the A group. After the TT I went with Daniel, Vincent, Yuma and Gento to breakfast and it was a good meal.

Criterium:
I drove to the race with Tony, Vincent and Daniel. Vincent and I registered. Then we got on our bikes and warmed up on the course with Zeak. We got to the start line and I was ready to race. The race started and I felt pretty good. A guy went off the front for a while and after a couple of laps we started to chase. When we caught him, another guy went for an attack so, I got on his wheel but the attack didn't end up going anywhere. There were a few of these attempts but they didn't work. The prime lap was announced so, I saw Vincent start to go for it on the back side so, I got on his wheel and started to sprint from the turn and I was passed close to the line for second place. We had a gap on the field but, I knew I was too tired to try and keep a break away so, I waited for the pack and got back in. The next few laps I sat in and recovered. Then there were a few guys trying to break away before the end of the race but, none of them worked. With two or three to go I made sure I was in the top five. On the last lap a guy attacked and another man went after him and I got on his wheel. I then passed them both before the turn and sprinted from there on for the line. With about 10 meters to go a guy passed me and I ended up placing second. Overall it was a fun race.

Road Race:
Drove out to the Uvas dam with my dad, mom and little brother. Then my dad and I registered and Vincent and I talked about the race and what we were planning to do. Then I went and warmed up on the road with Vincent, Andrew M, Andrew B and Zeak. Then we came back to the start line and they said go. The race started off and I felt pretty good. I stayed with Vincent and there were some attacks. We chased a few of them. Zeak and Andrew did a really good job counter attacking and attacking. Vincent then attacked after that and I sat on the wheel of the guy that was in second place. Before the wall we both started attacking and I sprinted for the top and ended up winning. After the first wall we had about a ten to twelve man group. Then we went around to the feed zone and I grabbed a water bottle from my mom and poured the whole thing over my head and body to keep my body temperature down. I noticed I was the only one to do that. Then the second time before the wall I started attacking with this other guy and with about 200 meters to the line I attacked harder and ended up winning that time too. After the wall we kept riding hard and ended up in a four man breakaway. We each took our pulls to stay away and I was trying to keep my heart rate down so I would have something left for the end. Then with about 1k to go it was every man for himself. With about 500k to go I started attacking and one guy was on my wheel so I sprinted as hard as I could to the line and I came across the line very happy for the win. I appreciate everything my teammates and the team helped me out with and also I really appreciate the team putting this race on. I really enjoyed it and I look forward to racing in it next year.

Group C Winner :: Pablo Traverso

This was my first Vuelta de San Jose. I didn't ride much this year between working hard on this bad economy and moving to a new place. It was indeed a very bad year but I was able to race a few Tuesday night crits and I enjoyed them and I set myself a goal to ride the Vuelta. I found myself two months before the Vuelta with not enough training and I decided at least finish. I trained hard and fortunately paid off.

ITT:
It was a beautiful morning in Morgan Hill when I arrived. This was my first Time Trail ever so I didn't know how to go about it. I found I had a flat when I went out to warm up so I didn't have time to do warm up.

My ITT didn't start very well and I set myself in a pace that was too slow. When I hit the short hill I realized I had a lot energy left so I stepped it up but when I hit the last corner I realized to my amazement that I had a flat again... I decided to ride hard and I finished with rim against pavement. My time wasn't very good and I ended up 4th.

Criterium:
All of a sudden, although I didn't qualify into the B Group I was not only going to finish the race, which was my original goal, but I had a chance to maybe win it. I realized that there were experienced riders in my group, Sean, Greg, Stephen and others. My plan was to stay in the front group as much as possible to be out of trouble and put myself in a good position to sprint. The pace was fortunately not very high so at not point I felt there was a chance to be dropped. I stayed in the front group and at times pulled. When we got like 50 meters from the last corner Sean attacked and by the time we turned the last corner he was three bike length ahead. Greg Raub then started a great lead out for his friend Greg and Stephen Fong attacked to the right. I found myself boxed in and in bad position. After all my planning I made a bad mistake on the last corner. I had to slow down, go left and kick it very hard. I started gaining on Sean, Stephen and both Greg but Greg's fantastic strategy paid off and I was not able to catch him. I finished second but gave me enough bonus points to get to 2 place at 6 seconds of Greg, now first.

Road Race:
I asked all my group members for advice on the road race as not only I've never done a road race before but also I have never rode this particular ride. Everybody was very nice and gave me great advice. My strategy the night before was to attack a mile before the start of the wall as I am not a particularly great climber but I decided to drive the area I was planning to attack in the morning and I decided against it. My strategy then was to pace the group in the beginning, finish top 3 ahead of Greg on the climb and then fight to the finish and try to win.

I talked to Sean before the race that if we were to make it to the top of the wall together we were going to work together to the end. I thought that was a sound strategy but I had doubts I was going to be able to keep up with him on the climb. The day was fantastic and I recovered well from Day One. We started the race and I started almost to the back. The group started very slow so I got myself out of trouble by taking the lead and speeding the group a bit. The pace continue quite high for almost the entire race which surprised me as there was always someone willing to pull.

When we go to the bottom of the wall, Greg yelled "Here we go boys" and I saw that monster ahead of me. Sean and Stephen attacked and Greg followed immediately after. I follow and got on his wheel. Stephen and Sean got a quick lead on Greg and myself and I knew I was not going to be able to keep up with those two. Greg dropped me couple of times but I was able to get back to this wheel. As almost got to the top of the wall he stood on his pedals but lowered his face. I realized I had him, I stood on my pedals and passed him to take 3rd place and 10 bonus seconds. I kept on pedaling and I noticed that Stephen and Sean were working together and they were pulling away from me. I was very tired from the climb but I put my face down and started pedaling as hard as I could. For several miles I rode in no man's land but I started to gain on Stephen and Sean which seemed to be concerned I was gaining on them because they kept on looking back. Greg and two other riders caught up with mye on Watsonville Road but I continued to pull and I was able to catch up Sean and Stephen a mile before the finish. I got on one of their wheels and I stayed there catching my breath.

Half a mile before the finish Sean attacked. A steady and strong attack that he kept all the way until the finish line. I was able to get on this wheel and Stephen got on mine but nobody else could follow. Stephen attacked 200 feet from the finish line and passed both Sean and myself. At that point I realized I was going to get boxed in if I didn't react so I kicked it into a lower gear and responded to the attack. I was able to pass them both to take the win and the overall GC win. Both Sean, who took second place, Stephen that got third and the rest of the guys, both Gregs who had an amazing race and smart strategy, made this a fun and challenging race.

I was excited to win on my first race but more exciting it was the fact that I enjoyed racing so much. Thanks to all the volunteers for organizing such a great event and thanks to the SJBC for all the efforts. You will see me around more often!
